DERIVED FROM “WELLPAPPFORMATE”, THE GERMAN WORD FOR CORRUGATED BOARD SHEETS, IT IS PROGROUP'S OWN MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR CONTROLLING ALL PRODUCTION PROCESSES, SEE ALSO ERP Okay - A P E W : M R O F system. With his digitisation approach, Jürgen Heindl found that we were a very willing customer.” But establishing data links to suppliers remained a challenge until Heindl offered to fix this problem at the beginning of the 1990s: When the Prokom system and subsequently E-Box was launched, the scheduling of purchasing became much more efficient, recalls Lichtenberger. Sure, there was definitely scepticism at the time, recalls Weilguni: “Our software on their computers…” was a frequent objection. The level of trust in suppliers and a firm belief in the benefits ultimately prevailed: “We have a close relationship with our customers based very much on trust. This is an important reason why many of them decided at a very early stage to link their company network to ours,” adds Ringe. STANDARD PRACTICE TODAY, BUT 30 YEARS AGO PIONEERING AND THINGS ARE BECOMING EVER MORE EFFICIENT Something that 98 per cent of all Progroup customers do today – sending orders digitally and tracking their processing online – was still a rare thing in the early 1990s and not always straightforward in technical terms. Horst Ringe, who joined the company at the start of 1998, installed the Prokom system including the DOS computers that were needed at cus- tomers’ premises. His task was to define the interfaces to the customers and set them up. The interface with Prokom was beneficial, the launch of the successor E-Box made the ordering process even better: “We have a better overview of the status of each order. For example, on which delivery run, at what time the order will be delivered to us,” says Lichtenberger. He hesitated for a long time about making the investment in E-Box – after all, this involved spending a six-figure sum. But this step really paid off: “Knowing what This link was the backbone of the system, it was all about processing customer data at Progroup and then transferring the data back to the customer. At the time, this was done with a modem link, point-to-point. “There were different telephone companies in each country, the cabling was different, the modems were not the same,” remembers Ringe. The system has only operated via internet since 2005, with the launch of E-Box, the browser- based successor to Prokom. Horst Ringe (left) oversaw the installation of Prokom and the DOS computers for customers. the Prokom and Wepaform were as it were precursors of Industry 4.0 solutions, long before this term even existed. we do now about the level of perfor- mance, we would have made the move to E-Box even earlier.” Talking about Prokom, E-Box and Wepaform, it becomes clear how Progroup and its central digital tool for production planning and control are fundamentally based on the same philosophy: A focus on the customer, networking and a modified production method – small quantities, just in time! HIGHLY EFFICIENT, STABLE – AND YET READY TO BE REPLACED A system that was developed at a time when today's levels of computing power were still science fiction has been operating without any problems for more than twenty years: “It could operate for another 20 years,” says Weilguni. Could – if the time on the 32-bit Unix/Linux-based systems did not run out in 2038: The systems will then no longer be able to save the change in time, and their time will then stop. This is not the only reason why work on replacing the system is already underway. “The technology is 30 years old and cannot easily be expanded,” says Weilguni in citing one aspect. It's not just the com- pany that has got bigger, the volume of data has grown too. Digital analytic capabilities are getting better and better. Almost all companies now rely on big data, self-learning machines, and artificial intelligence. The situation at Progroup is no different. “Wepaform is not the right tool for simple, rapid evalua- tion. This is why it will need to be replaced with another system. Progroup is going down this path, which is in line with the company’s consistent strategy: It is all about remaining futureproof, even if this means questioning old things that work. Inspiring Past 15
